Sanitary Sewer System
The sanitary sewer system has five lift stations in residential areas to lift the wastewater to high points on the sewer system. Once wastewater reaches these points, it flows by gravity to the treatment facility. Monroe's sanitary sewer system is comprised of 70 miles of piping, ranging from 6 inches to 36 inches in diameter. The City of Monroe is responsible for the sewer mains and lift stations.

Resident Responsibilities
Residents are responsible for the maintenance and cost of repair of the private sanitary service line, or lateral from the house or building, to the connection to the city's sanitary sewer main. Often, tree roots grow into a lateral or some material or item is pushed through the lateral from a sink, toilet, or other drain in the building, which affects proper flow.
